Originally from Japan, Ruri blends a unique mix of jazz styles and her own style to captivate any true jazz aficionado. She's a "musician's musician."
Ruri was originally inspired by legendary saxophonist and composer, Charlie Parker, a leading figure in the development of bebop, and virtuosic techniques. Ruri studied sax with the late Carl Randall, a prominent bebop sax player. Carl Randall played with Freddie Hubbard and toured for many years. Currently, Ruri studies with Rusty Higgins, one of the best studio players in Southern California.
In describing her love affair with the saxophone, Ruri states, "When I first took up saxophone, it was love at first sight...or "sound," in this case. I realized immediately that this was my instrument and my life's calling. I was and am still rigorous and disciplined about practicing, always seeking to improve my sound. The years of study, practice, and playing with many fine players and groups, have given me the ability to improvise creatively and compose my own music. My influences come from such great sax players as Grover Washington Jr., Ronnie Laws, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, David Sanborn, Gerald Albright, and Kenny Garrett, to name a few."
Musician, composer, and music teacher, Ruri Matthews has emerged as an exciting saxophonist in the LA area jazz music scene. Soul, funk, blues or straight-up jazz "play on demand" with this talented, creative musician.
